Asthma

Traditional Chinese Medicine theory explains that the Lungs and Kidneys work together to produce wei qi, analogous to the Western concept of the immune system. When the Lungs or Kidneys (or both) are weak, there is often a deficiency of wei qi, making patients susceptible to colds, infections, asthma attacks, and the like due to diminished immune function. Asthma, then, is generally attributed to a deficiency of wei qi.

Asthma tends to be seasonal, with the most devastating attacks occurring in winter and spring, and so Chinese medicine practitioners coordinate their treatment of asthma sufferers with the seasons. In the winter and spring, during attacks, the emphasis is on dispersing the pathogenic factors of Wind, Cold, and Heat. In the summer, the focus in on addressing the Deficiency condition of the Lungs and Kidneys, and stimulating the body to increase its reserves of wei qi.

Through the combined use of acupuncture for acute conditions and the more prolonged use of herbal formulas to address the underlying deficiencies of the Lungs and Kidneys, our acupuncturists can help you gain control over this most difficult and distressing condition, and help you return to full, vigorous health.
